There is a moment on every first safari when Africa suddenly becomes real.

For me, it happened many years ago when I saw my first giraffe.

I had always dreamed of visiting Africa, and we were travelling by bus when I spotted a giraffe standing beside the road. I was completely beside myself, calling to the driver to stop so that I could take a photograph through the window.

I had never seen anything like it in the wild. I was struck by its enormous size, its beautiful coat and the extraordinary grace with which it moved. It was so majestic that I was almost in tears.

Everyone tried to reassure me that we would see many more giraffes—and plenty of other wildlife—during the days ahead. But that wasn’t the point. This was my first wild animal in Africa, and I wanted to hold on to every second of it.

All these years later, I still remember exactly how I felt.

That moment changed my relationship with Africa. It was no longer somewhere I had read about, seen on television or admired in photographs. I had experienced it for myself, and that feeling became part of the way I spoke about the continent and encouraged others to visit.

You can see the moment it happens

In November 2024, a travel advisor who had worked in the industry for almost 40 years joined one of our FAM trips for her first safari.

She was sitting in the front seat of the safari vehicle when she saw an elephant close by for the first time. I managed to take a photograph of her face at that exact moment.

Her expression said everything.

There was excitement, disbelief and a wonderful sense of childlike awe. After almost four decades in travel, she was seeing something entirely new—and it had completely captivated her.

That is what experiencing Africa can do.

No webinar, brochure or sales presentation can recreate the feeling of being close to an elephant in the wild. They cannot convey the silence that falls over a safari vehicle when an animal appears, the excitement of an early-morning game drive or the sound of the bush coming to life around you.

You have to experience those things for yourself.

From product knowledge to genuine passion

For travel advisors, a FAM trip provides essential practical knowledge. You experience the accommodations, meet the suppliers, understand the distances and learn how the different parts of a safari fit together.

But something much more important happens as well: you become emotionally connected to the destination.

When you return home, you are no longer simply repeating information you have learned. You can describe how it actually feels to be there.

That changes the way you speak to clients.

Instead of listing what a safari includes, you can help someone imagine the experience. You can explain what it feels like when a giraffe appears above the trees, when an elephant quietly crosses in front of the vehicle or when you hear a lion calling in the distance after dark.

Your confidence grows because your knowledge is now firsthand. Your enthusiasm becomes natural because it comes from a real experience, not a sales script.

And clients recognize that difference.

Africa becomes a destination you look for opportunities to sell

Some travel advisors hesitate to recommend Africa because they worry that it will be too complicated. There are different countries, seasons, safari regions, accommodation styles and travel routes to understand.

A carefully designed FAM trip makes all of that far less intimidating.

It gives you the confidence to match clients with the right experience, answer their questions honestly and guide them through a journey that may feel unfamiliar at first. It also introduces you to trusted people on the ground—the guides, lodge teams and tourism partners who help bring every itinerary to life.

Most importantly, it creates passion.

Once you have felt the excitement of your own first safari, you want your clients to feel it too. Africa stops being a destination you might suggest if someone specifically asks about it. It becomes a destination you actively look for opportunities to recommend.

That is why experiencing Africa can transform the way a travel advisor sells it.

Award-winning FAM specialists

Recognized for the experiences we create

Africa FAM Trips was recently honoured with the African Excellence Award for Best FAM Trip Specialists.

We are incredibly proud of this recognition, but what matters most to us is creating journeys that have a lasting impact. Our FAM trips do more than showcase hotels and attractions. They help travel professionals understand Africa, build meaningful relationships with tourism partners and return home ready to sell the continent with confidence and genuine enthusiasm.

Because the best Africa specialists are not simply people who know the facts.

They are people who can tell you how Africa made them feel.

Perhaps your first unforgettable moment will be a giraffe beside the road, an elephant approaching your safari vehicle or a lion resting beneath an acacia tree.

Whatever it is, you will never forget it.

And it may just change the way you sell travel forever.
